Time: The Kalief Browder Story Part 5 (Netflix, 2017)
In this episode of Reality Behind Bars, Ashley and Carolyn continue their discussion of the Kalief Browder docuseries with Part Five, “Injustice for All.” After spending nearly three years incarcerated at Rikers Island without being convicted of a crime, Kalief is finally released but freedom does not mean the end of his incarceration experience.
The episode examines the devastating challenges Kalief faced during reentry after incarceration, including trauma, isolation, mental health struggles, stigma, media attention, and the difficulty of rebuilding a life after spending his teenage years behind bars. His family desperately wants to help, but they struggle to understand what he experienced and what he needs.
Ashley brings a psychological and neuroscience perspective to Kalief's increasingly severe mental health symptoms, discussing trauma, dissociation, psychosis, paranoia, suicide risk, and the complexities surrounding psychiatric medication. Carolyn draws on her own lived experience of incarceration to discuss the fear, anxiety, and overwhelming nature of returning to everyday life after being released.
The conversation also explores Kalief's growing national profile, his civil lawsuit against New York City, his encounters with celebrities and the media, and the conflict between using his story to seek justice and finding the quiet, safe environment he needed to heal. The episode examines the role of Rewilding, higher education, counselors, police, and mental health services in his attempted recovery.
Finally, Ashley and Carolyn reflect on Kalief's suicide and consider what a psychological autopsy can teach us about the failures surrounding his incarceration, reentry, mental health care, and safety.
