60 Days In S3E7 (A&E, 2017)
In this episode of Reality Behind Bars, Ashley and Carolyn take a closer look at 60 Days In Season 3, Episode 7, “Tapping Out.” This episode marks a major turning point as Jessica becomes the first participant to leave the program after the flooding, sewage, living conditions, and cumulative stress push her to her limit. Ashley and Carolyn discuss what Jessica learned during her time inside, her transition back to the outside world, and the importance of meaningful reentry support after incarceration.
The conversation also examines the experiences of Michelle and Mauri in the women’s South Annex. Michelle struggles with poor living conditions, lack of sleep, isolation, and emotional distress, while Mauri confronts the challenges of having limited contact with family. A planned DART team shakedown raises questions about contraband, drug use, searches, and whether simply removing hiding places addresses the underlying reasons people use drugs in jail.
In Zone 500, the focus shifts to gang affiliation, inmate power structures, violence, and survival behind bars. Calvin discusses how race may influence who is pressured to identify with gangs, while Too Tall uses intimidation and violence to maintain his position within the pod. The hosts also explore how inmates respond to fights and why people may deliberately avoid becoming involved.
Finally, Don experiences the psychological effects of isolation before receiving a new cellmate, Zach, while Jon takes a different approach with Deshaun, attempting to move beyond conflict and provide guidance to a young person with a traumatic background.
