60 Days In S3E5 (A&E, 2017)

In this episode of Reality Behind Bars, Ashley and Carolyn break down 60 Days In Season 3, Episode 5, “Dangerous Liaisons,” examining what the show reveals, and what it may leave out, about life inside an Atlanta jail.

The episode opens with a violent confrontation between Marcus and Too Tall in Zone 500. We discuss the role of gang affiliation, pod bosses, inmate hierarchy, and violence behind bars, including the disturbing question of why correctional officers appear to watch the fight rather than immediately intervene. What determines when jail staff step in, and what does that tell us about how violence is managed inside correctional facilities?

We also examine Nate's new cellmate, Desmond, whose story highlights the complicated relationship between gang involvement, grief, trauma, and incarceration. Desmond opens up about his brother's death, his family's history with incarceration, and the experiences that have shaped his life. Carolyn considers how an unexpected gesture from Nate may have created enough trust for Desmond to begin sharing his story.

Meanwhile, the episode raises important questions about mental illness in jail through Jason's increasingly erratic behavior. Ashley examines the behavior shown on screen from a psychological perspective while emphasizing the limitations of attempting to understand or diagnose someone based solely on a television program. The episode also explores the challenges faced by the civilian participants as they navigate jail rules, inmate relationships, suspected undercover participants, medication, contraband, and the constant uncertainty of knowing who can be trusted.

As always, Ashley and Carolyn look beyond the reality-TV editing to ask bigger questions about incarceration, correctional practices, jail violence, mental health, gang culture, and the human experiences behind the stories portrayed on television.
