60 Days In S3E1 (A&E, 2017)
A new jail, a new group of participants, and a completely different correctional environment. In this episode of Reality Behind Bars, Ashley and Carolyn kick off their coverage of 60 Days In Season 3 by breaking down Episode 1, "Welcome to the ATL," as the series moves from Indiana to the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Georgia.
Drawing on Ashley's expertise in psychology and the criminal justice system alongside Carolyn's lived experience with incarceration, the hosts examine how the Fulton County Jail differs from previous facilities featured on the show. They discuss gang activity, overcrowding, staffing shortages, federal oversight, jail design, inmate housing, and the challenges of operating one of the nation's largest county jails.
Ashley and Carolyn introduce the Season 3 participants, exploring the diverse motivations that brought them to the program—including former law enforcement officers, educators, military veterans, criminal justice reform advocates, and individuals with loved ones impacted by incarceration. The episode also takes a critical look at the undercover cover stories assigned to participants, the realities of jail intake and transportation, contraband entering correctional facilities, and the emotional toll of being processed into custody.
Carolyn shares personal insights from her own incarceration, comparing the transport process, shackling procedures, and adjustment to jail life with what viewers see on screen. Together, the hosts discuss how 60 Days In portrays incarceration, where the series succeeds, and where it oversimplifies the realities of life behind bars.
